On Signs and Logos

Over the summer, I actually had the great chance to go to London. When I was there, I saw so many great sights and met many great people. However, just as the article points out, many of the road signs are indeed poorly designed. I wouldn’t go as far as the writer does and say that they are completely unpleasing, distracting, or what have you, but the differences between some such as “Tower Bridge” and “Tower bridge” were apparent to me. There was at least one case of the Underground signs having a lowercase where the rest were uppercase too.
Unlike the writer, I don’t try to pull some significant meaning out of a design because such is not always the case. Looking at things from a normal person’s perspective, one who doesn’t care for the complicated reasoning (or sometimes lack thereof, some things just look nice after all) why the company logo decides to place the fish facing left instead of right. The signs in London are designed to tell people where to go, what not to do, what to do, etc, not create an epiphany within a driver.
When it comes to companies and their logos, sometimes things have to change. While there are always some people who believe “the old logo was better” the simple fact is that not all designs manage to age well. UPS, for example, has had a couple design changes and when considering the look of the second-to-most-recent one’s design, it would eventually have to change. I personally like the more simplistic yet stylish design and if it is truly necessary to draw a meaning from it, it shows that the service is still accessible (or simple).

The situation with the Citroën and McDonald’s, I don’t know of nor can I really comment on it as well as the other two since I have up until now never heard of the former nor set foot inside a McDonald’s in years.

My Products

The Squid

- The idea of The Squid is to have a multi-use tool in the kitchen. The Squid can be used as a grinder for pepper corns, rock salt, etc, grate cheese, juice fruit, and many other things.

- It is an attempt at being a nonsensical yet incredibly useful tool.

- Targets chefs or those who work in the kitchen often.

The Flawcet

- The Flawcet is meant to be a useful and easy to use (it's not) water dispenser.

- Incredibly weighty and impossible to move around or use efficiently.

- Targets people who have too much time on their hands or question government infrastructure.

Five Questions

What is your computer experience?
I've been using computers since I was a wee tot. I learned very quickly how to use them, knowing how to click, access the internet, etc.

I use them every single day to do whatever piques my interest at the moment, from writing to gaming.

What is your major class?
Game Design

What do you hope to get out of this class?
I want to be able to create original images through this and hopefully become better at drawing and creating said images.

Who is your favorite artist?
A lot of writers, Tolkien, GRRM, Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson. There are many people in the game industry that I like as well like Shigeru Miyamoto and Notch.

Write a five line story?
Jory watched as the next two competitors rode their horses into the lists. Ewan had been notably disturbed when Syemon Rendon slew the heir to House Haldon in his last bout and swore to Jory that he would not let the boy advance any further. In his armor, Ewan looked less like the jolly fat lord that attended his father's feasts and more like a threatening lord a top his brown courser.

On the other end, Syemon smiled wolfishly at Ewan and even after he dropped his visor, Jory could tell he was intending to strike Ewan down too. Ewan, however, loudly called to his opponent, "On behalf of House Haldon, I shall avenge the death of young Willan!" and pulled his visor down and taking up his lance. Syemon laughed behind his helm and already began his charge. Ewan did the same and when the two were close, both lances burst into wooden splinters on their shields. Syemon let out a cry of disgust and Ewan wasted no time in throwing the broken lance away before taking up the new one.

On the second pass, their lances broke again and Syemon became angrier. They took their new lances and Ewan rose his high before letting out a thunderous roar. Their horses charged and Syemon was thrown from his horse by Lord Lander. The stadium let out a massive cheer and Jory stood up and joined them. Ewan rounded the fence, holding up his lance to the cheering crowd and Syemon was pulled off the ground by his attendants, he was unconscious but alive.
